Happy Returns Daylily performs best in full sun, though it will also tolerate light shade, especially in hotter climates. It prefers well-draining soil and is highly adaptable to a range of soil types, including clay, loam, or sandy conditions. Once established, it is very drought-tolerant and low maintenance.
Happy Returns typically grows to about 18–24 inches tall and 18–24 inches wide. It forms neat, grassy clumps with lemon-yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers held just above the foliage, making it perfect for edging, borders, and mass plantings.
Happy Returns is known for its prolific and extended blooming period. It begins flowering in late spring and reblooms throughout summer into early fall, making it one of the most dependable and long-flowering daylilies available.
While not completely deer-proof, Happy Returns is considered moderately deer-resistant. Deer tend to avoid daylilies in favor of more palatable plants, though in areas with heavy deer pressure, some browsing may occur. Rabbits may be more likely to nibble the foliage.
Happy Returns requires minimal maintenance. You can deadhead spent flowers to keep the plant tidy and encourage reblooming. In late fall or early spring, cut back old foliage to allow new growth to emerge cleanly. The plant can be divided every 3–5 years to maintain vigor and create new clumps.
