Cupressocyparis × leylandii, commonly known as Leyland Cypress, is a fast-growing, evergreen conifer often used for privacy screens and windbreaks. This sterile hybrid between Monterey Cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa) and Nootka Cypress (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis) can grow 3 to 4 feet per year, reaching heights of 40 to 60 feet or more. With soft, feathery green foliage and a dense, upright habit, it provides year-round screening and is commonly planted along property lines. While popular for its speed and form, Leyland Cypress is non-native and offers minimal support for wildlife.
Rapid growth: Ideal for creating quick privacy or large evergreen hedges
Dense form: Naturally thick foliage provides year-round screening and wind protection
Adaptable: Tolerates a range of soils and is widely used in suburban and urban landscapes
Sun exposure: Requires full sun for optimal density and health
Soil needs: Prefers well-drained soil; avoid poorly drained, wet locations
Maintenance: Prune to control size; allow space for mature height and width
Privacy screens: A popular choice for fast evergreen barriers
Windbreaks: Effective for reducing wind in open or exposed landscapes
Property borders: Offers a clean, green backdrop for other landscape elements
Non-native hybrid: Provides little habitat or food value for native wildlife
Disease susceptibility: Prone to canker and root rot in overly wet soils
Best used with natives: Consider planting with native evergreens for improved biodiversity
Ilex opaca – American Holly: A tall native evergreen tree with glossy, spiny leaves and red berries that support birds and provide privacy year-round.
Juniperus virginiana – Eastern Red Cedar: A durable native conifer with blue-green foliage and berry-like cones that attract birds and resist drought. Ilex glabra ‘Shamrock’ – Shamrock Inkberry: A dense, broadleaf evergreen native shrub ideal for lower hedges and layered native screening.
