Vaccinium corymbosum ‘Duke‘, commonly known as Duke Highbush Blueberry, is a northern highbush variety prized for its early harvest, high yields, and excellent flavor. This deciduous shrub grows 4 to 6 feet tall and wide, making it an ideal addition to home gardens and edible landscapes. Duke produces abundant clusters of firm, sweet berries in early summer, perfect for fresh eating, baking, and preserving.
In addition to its delicious fruit, Duke Highbush Blueberry offers multi-season interest. Bell-shaped white flowers bloom in spring, followed by lush green foliage and bright blue berries in summer. In fall, the foliage turns shades of orange and red, adding vibrant color to the landscape. As a native plant, it provides essential habitat and food for birds, pollinators, and other wildlife.

‘Duke’ Highbush Blueberry thrives in full sun and requires acidic, well-drained, moist soils with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5. Consistent moisture is important, but the soil should not be waterlogged. Mulching helps retain moisture and maintain acidic conditions.
‘Duke’ typically grows 4 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, forming an upright, dense shrub. It’s well-suited for home gardens, edible landscapes, and hedgerows
‘Duke’ blooms in spring (April to May) and produces berries that ripen in early to mid-summer (typically June). It’s known for being one of the earliest-ripening northern highbush varieties.
Duke’ is self-pollinating, but planting another variety of highbush blueberry nearby will increase fruit yield and size. Good companion varieties include ‘Bluecrop’ or ‘Patriot’.
‘Duke’ is considered low-maintenance, but it benefits from annual pruning in late winter to remove older, less productive canes and encourage new growth. Maintain soil acidity with amendments if needed, and ensure the plant receives consistent moisture, especially during fruit development.
