Product Description

Juniperus chinensis ‘Parsonii’, commonly known as Parsoni Juniper, is a hardy, low-growing evergreen shrub with soft, blue-green foliage and a wide, spreading habit. Growing 2 to 3 feet tall and 5 to 7 feet wide, Parsoni is an excellent groundcover or foundation shrub for sunny landscapes, especially in dry or sandy soils. Its fine texture, evergreen color, and strong drought tolerance make it a staple in low-maintenance, coastal, or xeriscape gardens. However, as a non-native species, it provides little value for native wildlife or pollinators.

Why choose Parsoni Juniper:

  • Reliable groundcover: Low, spreading form provides dense evergreen coverage

  • Drought-tolerant: Thrives in sandy or dry soils with minimal care

  • Year-round color: Silvery blue-green foliage adds soft texture to landscapes

Cultivating tips:

  • Sun exposure: Requires full sun for best color and growth

  • Soil needs: Prefers sandy, well-drained soils; avoid overly wet or compacted areas

  • Maintenance: Very low; prune to shape or control spread if necessary

Designs for your garden:

  • Coastal or xeriscapes: Ideal for dry, sunny locations with poor soil

  • Slopes and erosion control: Effective groundcover for stabilizing banks

  • Foundation borders: Fits well in front of taller shrubs or evergreen screens

Ecological considerations:

  • Non-native species: Offers little food or habitat for native birds and insects

  • Not a host plant: Does not support native caterpillars or pollinator species

  • Pair with natives: Combine with native shrubs or perennials to enhance habitat value

Looking for native alternatives?

Juniperus virginiana – Eastern Red Cedar: A native evergreen tree that provides habitat, berries for birds, and strong drought tolerance.
Ilex glabra ‘Compacta’ – Compact Inkberry: A broadleaf native evergreen with dense growth ideal for low hedging and foundation plantings.
Ilex glabra ‘Shamrock’ – Shamrock Inkberry: A glossy native shrub offering compact form, evergreen foliage, and strong support for native ecosystems.
