Hydrangea schizophragma ‘Moonlight‘, commonly known as Moonlight Climbing Hydrangea, is a deciduous vine admired for its heart-shaped, silvery blue-green foliage and large, showy white lacecap flowers. Blooming in early to mid-summer, this climbing hydrangea can reach heights of 20 to 30 feet when grown on a sturdy support such as a wall, fence, or pergola.
Moonlight Climbing Hydrangea provides a beautiful vertical accent in shaded or partly shaded areas. While it offers ornamental beauty and versatility in the landscape, it is not a native species and provides limited ecological benefits compared to native plants.

Hydrangea ‘Moonlight’ is a vigorous, deciduous climbing vine that can reach up to 20-30 feet tall when mature. It climbs by aerial rootlets, so it needs a sturdy vertical surface, like a wall, fence, trellis, or tree trunk, for support.
‘Moonlight’ grows best in partial shade to full shade, making it ideal for shady walls or woodland gardens. It prefers moist, well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter, but it’s adaptable to different soil types as long as the drainage is good.
It typically blooms in early to mid-summer. The flowers are large, flat-topped lacecap clusters of creamy-white blossoms, surrounded by showy, sterile bracts. These blooms can cover the vine, creating a stunning display against its silvery, blue-green foliage.
While not fully deer-proof, it is less palatable to deer than many other plants. ‘Moonlight’ is considered low-maintenance once established. It benefits from mulching to keep roots cool and moist and requires minimal pruning, typically just to control its size or shape after flowering.
Yes! The nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Its dense foliage can also provide habitat and cover for small wildlife, adding ecological value to your garden.
