Rhododendron maximum ‘Roseum’, commonly known as Rosebay Rhododendron, is a broadleaf evergreen shrub native to eastern North America. This ‘Roseum’ variety is prized for its showy pale pink to rose-colored flower clusters that bloom in mid to late summer, later than most rhododendrons. Growing 10 to 15 feet tall and wide, it forms a dense, rounded shrub ideal for naturalized areas, woodland gardens, and shady borders.
The large, leathery green leaves provide year-round interest and serve as excellent cover for birds and small wildlife. Its nectar-rich blooms attract pollinators, including bees and butterflies, while its dense structure offers important shelter for wildlife.

This Rosebay Rhododendron prefers partial shade to full shade, making it ideal for woodland gardens or shady borders. It thrives in acidic, well-drained soils that are rich in organic matter. Consistent moisture is important, but the soil should never be soggy.
It blooms in early to mid-summer, typically June to July, later than many other rhododendrons. The soft pink, bell-shaped flowers are borne in large clusters (trusses) and add a beautiful splash of color to shaded areas.
This large, evergreen shrub can grow up to 10 to 15 feet tall and 6 to 12 feet wide, making it an excellent choice for privacy screens, hedgerows, or as a specimen plant in larger landscapes.
While not entirely deer-proof, Rosebay Rhododendrons are somewhat deer-resistant, especially when mature. The dense foliage provides excellent cover and nesting sites for birds, and its flowers attract bees and butterflies
Once established, it’s low-maintenance, but benefits from mulching to keep roots cool and moist. Avoid planting too deep, and ensure the soil stays acidic. Pruning is rarely needed but can be done after flowering to shape or control size.
