Mountain Laurel thrives in partial shade and prefers cool, moist, acidic, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. It performs best in woodland settings, shaded borders, or north-facing slopes, and benefits from mulching to retain moisture and keep roots cool. Avoid heavy clay or alkaline soils.
This broadleaf evergreen shrub typically grows 5–12 feet tall and wide, forming a rounded, multi-stemmed shape. Dwarf cultivars stay more compact (3–5 feet), making it suitable for foundation plantings, woodland edges, or as an understory accent.
Mountain Laurel blooms in late spring to early summer (usually May to June), with clusters of bell-shaped flowers in shades of pink, rose, or white, often marked with deep red or purple spots. The showy blooms appear above glossy, dark green leaves.
Mountain Laurel is considered deer-resistant. Its thick, leathery leaves are toxic and unpalatable to deer and rabbits, making it a good choice for shaded gardens where browsing is an issue.
While not a pollinator powerhouse, Mountain Laurel provides cover and nesting sites for birds and small wildlife. Its dense, evergreen foliage adds year-round structure and habitat value to native and naturalized landscapes.
