Yes. Ilex glabra (Inkberry holly) is native to the eastern United States, particularly in coastal plains and moist woodland areas. Gembox® is a compact cultivar of this native species and retains the wildlife and pollinator value of the straight species, making it a great choice for eco-friendly landscapes.
Gembox® is a dense, compact, and rounded cultivar, typically growing 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, with small, dark green evergreen leaves that maintain color throughout winter. It is bred to be fuller and more resistant to legginess than older inkberry varieties, making it excellent for low hedges, foundation plantings, and formal borders.
Gembox® performs best in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, acidic, well-drained soils, though it will tolerate occasional wet conditions. It is hardy in USDA zones 5 through 9 and adapts well to rain gardens, woodland edges, and mixed native shrub plantings.
Yes. The small white spring flowers attract native bees, and female plants (if pollinated by a nearby male Ilex glabra) can produce black berries that are eaten by birds. As a native evergreen, it also provides year-round cover and nesting habitat for wildlife.
Yes. Gembox® is generally deer-resistant, disease-tolerant, and low-maintenance. It requires little pruning to maintain its shape and is a great native alternative to boxwood in landscapes where ecological value and evergreen structure are both desired.
