Renowned for its massive, cone-shaped white flower clusters that can reach up to 12 inches long, ‘Alice’ provides a striking display in early to mid-summer. As the blooms mature, they develop soft pink tones, extending the season of interest.
Reaching 10 to 12 feet tall and wide, Alice Oakleaf Hydrangea makes a bold statement in woodland gardens, naturalized areas, and large landscape borders. Its deeply lobed, oak-like leaves turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and burgundy in the fall, while its peeling bark adds winter interest. ‘Alice’ is one of the largest Oakleaf Hydrangeas, typically growing 8 to 10 feet tall and 8 to 12 feet wide. Its impressive size makes it ideal as a specimen shrub, backdrop for borders, or a natural screen in the landscape.
‘Alice’ blooms in early to mid-summer, producing large, elongated panicles (up to 12 inches long) of creamy white flowers. As the season progresses, the blooms age to a soft pink, providing extended color interest through the summer
‘Alice’ prefers partial shade, especially in hotter climates, but can tolerate full sun if planted in moist, well-drained soil. It thrives in acidic, fertile soils, rich in organic matter. Regular watering is helpful during dry periods, especially when establishing.
Yes! The deeply lobed oak-shaped leaves turn brilliant shades of burgundy, red, and purple in fall. In winter, the exfoliating bark on mature stems adds interesting texture and color, making ‘Alice’ an excellent four-season plant.
While not entirely deer-proof, ‘Alice’ is less appealing to deer compared to other hydrangeas. It’s low-maintenance, requiring minimal pruning—usually just after flowering to shape or remove any dead wood. Mulching helps retain moisture and improve soil health.
