Acer saccharinum, commonly known as Silver Maple, is a fast-growing deciduous tree native to much of eastern and central North America. It is recognized for its deeply lobed leaves with silvery undersides that shimmer in the wind, along with its tall, spreading habit that can reach 50 to 70 feet at maturity. Silver Maple is well-suited for large landscapes, naturalized areas, and restoration plantings where rapid canopy development is desired. Its adaptability to moist soils and periodic flooding makes it a useful choice for riparian or low-lying sites.

Silver Maple is a fast-growing, large deciduous tree, typically reaching 50 to 80 feet tall with a spread of 40 to 60 feet. It develops a broad, rounded crown and is known for its arching limbs and shimmering silvery underside of leaves, which move gracefully in the breeze.
Silver Maple thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils, though it tolerates heavy clay, periodic flooding, and poor drainage better than most maples. It is often used in low areas, wetland edges, or along streams and rivers.
Silver Maple offers quick shade and tolerance to urban conditions, but it has some drawbacks: its brittle wood is prone to storm damage, and its aggressive roots can invade sewer lines or lift sidewalks. For smaller yards or areas near structures, a more compact or slower-growing alternative like Acer rubrum may be a better fit.
While not as vibrant as red or sugar maples, Silver Maple offers yellow to yellow-brown fall color. Its silvery leaf undersides and textured gray bark provide visual interest throughout the growing season, especially when the wind catches the foliage.
Yes! Silver Maple is a valuable native tree that supports early-season pollinators with its small, red to yellow-green flowers that appear in late winter to early spring. It also supports numerous native insects and caterpillars, which are essential food for songbirds and wildlife.
