Red Sunset® Maple is a medium to large deciduous shade tree, typically growing 40 to 50 feet tall and 30 to 40 feet wide. It has a strong central leader and a dense, oval to pyramidal crown, making it ideal for street plantings, lawns, or large landscapes.
Red Sunset® is prized for its exceptionally vibrant fall color—a reliable and intense display of brilliant orange to red foliage. It colors earlier than most other red maples and holds its leaves longer into fall, providing a longer window of seasonal interest.
This maple performs best in full sun to light shade and thrives in moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soils. It is tolerant of clay soils, urban conditions, and temporary wetness, making it versatile for a variety of landscapes. However, it does not tolerate prolonged drought or very alkaline soils well.
Red Sunset® is considered low-maintenance once established. It requires little pruning beyond shaping or removing dead branches in late winter. While not highly deer-resistant, mature trees are typically left alone—young saplings may need protection in deer-heavy areas.
Yes! As a native species, Acer rubrum supports a variety of native caterpillars and insects, which in turn support songbirds. Its early spring flowers also provide an important nectar source for bees and other pollinators, even though the blooms are not highly ornamental.
