Buxus × Green Mountain is an upright evergreen boxwood hybrid valued for its strong vertical habit, cold tolerance, and dependable performance in structured landscapes. It typically develops a narrowly pyramidal form and is commonly used where height and definition are needed without excessive width.
Small, dark green leaves form dense branching that provides year-round structure and responds well to pruning. Green Mountain was selected for improved winter hardiness and better resistance to winter burn compared to older boxwood types, making it a reliable choice in colder climates. Its naturally upright habit allows it to maintain a formal appearance with minimal shaping.
Well-suited for home landscapes, Green Mountain Boxwood grows best in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soils. Its moderate growth rate and strong structure make it a practical option for vertical accents, hedges, and formal garden designs that require lasting evergreen form.

Green Mountain Boxwood prefers partial to full sun and grows best in well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. It appreciates consistent moisture but should not sit in soggy conditions. Mulching helps conserve moisture and regulate root temperature. It tolerates urban conditions and is cold-hardy, making it a reliable year-round shrub.
Green Mountain has a naturally upright, pyramidal shape, reaching about 4–5 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide at maturity. It maintains a dense, formal appearance with minimal pruning, making it perfect for hedges, topiary, entryways, or as a specimen plant.
Green Mountain is one of the hardiest boxwood varieties, rated for USDA Zones 4–9. It was bred in Canada for improved winter hardiness and maintains its green color even in colder climates where many boxwoods suffer from bronzing or dieback.
Minimal pruning is needed to maintain its shape. If shaping is desired, prune in late spring after the first flush of growth. Avoid heavy pruning in late summer or fall, as this can encourage tender new growth that’s vulnerable to winter damage.
Boxwoods, including Green Mountain, are generally deer-resistant. Their dense, aromatic evergreen foliage is unpalatable to deer, making them a popular choice for formal landscapes and gardens with browsing concerns.
