Antennaria plantaginifolia, commonly known as Pussytoes, is a native, low-growing perennial found throughout much of eastern North America. Plantain-Leaved Pussytoes thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers dry to medium, well-drained soil. It is highly drought-tolerant and is excellent for rock gardens, dry meadows, and erosion control.
This low-growing ground cover typically reaches 4 to 6 inches tall and spreads 12 to 18 inches wide, forming dense mats of silvery-green foliage.
It blooms in spring (April to May), producing small, white, fuzzy flower clusters resembling tiny cat paws, which is how it gets the name “Pussytoes.”
Yes, it is highly deer- and rabbit-resistant, as its fuzzy leaves are unappealing to browsing animals.
This is a low-maintenance plant. It requires little to no watering once established and spreads by rhizomes, making it an effective ground cover. Cutting back spent flowers can help maintain a tidy appearance.
