Castanea dentata, commonly known as American Chestnut, is a native deciduous tree historically valued for its massive size, straight trunk, and importance to eastern forest ecosystems. Once a dominant canopy tree across much of the eastern United States, it typically grows 50 to 70 feet tall or more, with a broad, spreading crown when mature.
Long, narrow green leaves with sharply toothed edges create a dense summer canopy. In late spring to early summer, pale yellow catkins appear, followed by spiny burs that once produced abundant edible nuts. While mature, blight-free American Chestnuts are now rare due to chestnut blight, the species remains ecologically and historically significant and is often planted as part of restoration and conservation efforts.
American Chestnut grows best in full sun and prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soils. It establishes quickly and develops a strong root system, though long-term survival depends on site conditions and disease pressure. It is best suited for large landscapes, restoration plantings, and native-focused properties with ample space.

American Chestnut thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. It does best on slopes or elevated sites with good air circulation and is tolerant of drought and rocky soils once established. Avoid poorly draining or heavy clay soil.
When unaffected by blight, American Chestnut is a large, fast-growing deciduous tree, capable of reaching 60–100 feet tall with a broad, rounded crown. Saplings and sprouts are often shorter due to the impacts of the chestnut blight in much of its native range.
Yes—chestnut blight (Cryphonectria parasitica) remains a major threat to Castanea dentata. Most wild individuals die back after reaching 10–20 feet tall. However, blight-resistant hybrids, backcrosses, and experimental plantings are in development to help restore the species.
Yes! American Chestnuts produce sweet, edible nuts enclosed in spiny burrs. These nuts are highly valued by wildlife and humans alike, but healthy nut production depends on having multiple trees for cross-pollination and adequate time to mature (3–7+ years).
Absolutely. It was once a keystone species in eastern U.S. forests, providing nutrient-rich food for birds, deer, bears, and small mammals, along with high-quality timber. Restoration efforts aim to revive these benefits by reintroducing the species to its native range.
